This PDF is for Knox County, Tennessee only. If you are applying for or renewing a notary commission in another Tennessee county, check with your local County Clerk’s office for their specific requirements, fees, and meeting dates. Every county handles the process a little differently.
One thing Knox County does allow is early renewal for notaries—which is always smarter than waiting until the last minute and risking your commission expiring.
Knox County provides your notary commission certificate, but they do not provide your notary seal. You will need to purchase your seal separately from a notary supply company. Some Tennessee counties may include the seal, so don’t assume every county follows the same process.
Current Knox County fees are:
• $12.00 application fee
• $5.00 notary oath fee collected by the Clerk
• $0.43 processing fee for credit/debit card payments
Total due when applying or renewing by card: $17.43
Your surety bond must cover the full term of your commission—from the beginning date through the expiration date. You will need to provide your bond when you pick up your commission certificate. If you forget your bond, you won’t receive your commission that day.
This information applies only to a traditional Tennessee notary commission. Becoming a Tennessee Remote Online Notary (RON) is a completely separate authorization process through the Tennessee Secretary of State.
To become a RON in Tennessee, you must already hold an active traditional notary commission. The RON application fee is currently $75 and is separate from your traditional notary fees and bond requirements.
Also important to understand: your Tennessee Remote Online Notary authorization runs concurrently with your traditional notary commission. Your RON expiration date will match your traditional commission expiration date, regardless of when you apply for your RON authorization.
For example, if your traditional notary commission expires in one year and you apply for your RON authorization today, your RON commission will also expire in one year—not four years. Many notaries do not realize this until after they pay the application fee, so timing your RON application wisely can save frustration later.
